1. Concentrated and flat.
The optical lens through which the laser beam passes focuses the beam to a small spot. In most cases, the focal point should be set on the top surface of the material being engraved. This ensures material removal with the smallest and most precise beam possible during the engraving process. This process is simplified by setting the focal length at a fixed position inside the beam transmission. Then use a simple spacer tool to set the gap between the nozzle and the top surface of the material.
In general, the best engraving materials are those with a single plane. However, surfaces with subtle variations or arcs can be successfully sculpted. The flask photo below shows an example of a slightly uneven or curved surface.
However, some materials are more forgiving and will not show a change in focus. Wood is a great material, you can have some variation in the flatness and still get beautiful results!
2. Take the time to test the engraving.
For material you are unfamiliar with or don't have a setup file, do a small test on a scrap piece to evaluate your setup. Usually, it only takes an inch or so of engraving to let you know if the quality and clarity are up to your standards. You can then adjust power, resolution, or other miscellaneous settings before running the final job.
3. Select a high-quality image.
One of the most common problems with laser engraving is image quality. If you start with a poor quality image, it's nearly impossible to get a good sculpt. If there is any blurring or pixelation, the engraving will not have crisp, clear lines.
